 WHY WOMEN AND GIRLS?

  • It will take 107 years to close the gender gap, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap report.

  • The World Bank’s report on Women, Business, and the Law measured that only 6 countries give women and men equal legal work rights. The other 187 countries gave women only an average of the-quarters the working rights as men.

  • The US Department of Labor and Fortune reports that women represent only 5% of CEOs at Fortune 500 firms, while women make up 63% of workers earning federal minimum wage.

  • Childcare is the #1 greatest obstacle to women’s participation in the global labor force according to Gallup and the International Labor Organization.

  • There are 2.24 men for every single female character in film.

  • According to UNWomen.org, 796 million people in the world are illiterate—women make up more than 2/3 of that number.

  • Women and girls account for 72% of all human trafficking victims worldwide.

  • The National Domestic Violence Hotline indicates that 1 in 4 women in the United States has been physically abused by an intimate partner.

  • In 2017 alone, 58% of the 87,000 women intentionally killed were murdered by family members or intimate partners.

  • 9 out of every 10 American victims of rape are female, and 17.7 million American women have been raped since 1998.

Debbie McLeod grew up in Maryland and Virginia, moved to Houston as a teenager and has lived there for more than 45 years. She received a BA in French from Baylor University in 1982 and a Master’s of Divinity from Yale Divinity School in 2009. Debbie has been on a variety of boards over the years focused both nationally and internationally. She is a managing partner at McLeod Sears, a commercial real estate development company.
